UST General Santos Associate Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Edilberto P. Manahan, PhD was the recipient of the Philippine Federation of Professional Associations, Inc. (PFPA) Distinction Award for the Medical Technology Profession, for the Academe/Research and Development category.

In a social media post, Manahan dedicated the award to his “family for their unwavering support and to my students, who inspire me to improve my teaching. Most importantly, I thank Almighty God, the source of all blessings. I offer back to you the gift you have given me.”

A seasoned medical technology educator, Manahan has served as Chair of the UST Faculty of Pharmacy’s Department of Medical Technology. Under his term, the Department secured its international certification from the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance. When UST General Santos opened its BS Pharmacy and BS Medical Technology programs in 2024, Manahan was named the inaugural Director of the School of Health Sciences.

The PFPA Distinction Award was first conferred in 2005 to recognize “the outstanding achievements and contributions of Filipino professionals to their respective professions, either locally or abroad.” Manahan was endorsed by the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists, Inc. (PAMET).

Among Thomasian awardees in past conferment rites is Psychology Professor Marc Eric S. Reyes, PhD.

On August 29, 2024, the ɫ – General Santos officially welcomed the inaugural batch of students to the Thomasian ɫ at the UST General Santos Main Building lobby.

UST Rector Very Rev. fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD, led the Eucharistic Celebration. In his homily, fr. Ang acknowledged that there will be challenges and reluctance along their journey, especially in the new and big learning environment they are about to experience in the newly inaugurated Mindanao campus. However, the Rector encouraged them to take the first step. “Your true destiny will await you the moment you decisively commit yourselves to your newfound academic endeavor,” fr. Ang said.

“Freshmen, we want you not just to survive but to thrive, for your successes and glory are tantamount to our communal achievement,” fr. Ang added.

In the Academic Year 2024-2025, a total of 126 Thomasians from the School of Health Sciences, School of Business and Accountancy, and the School of Engineering and Information Technology experienced the same Thomasian tradition conducted annually in its Manila counterpart, namely the Welcome Mass, ROARientation, and the Thomasian Welcome Walk.

The ɫ joined in the celebration of the Feast of the End of Ramadan on April 10, 2024 (Wednesday), with our Muslim brothers and sisters in Barangay Batomelong, General Santos City, a day before the inauguration of the General Santos campus.

The activity, a joint undertaking with the alumni of the Tomasinong SOCCSKSARGEN chapter, gathered close to 300 attendees comprised of 150 families, SOCCSKSARGEN chapter officials, UST Alumni Association, Inc. officials, and UST officials. The Thomasian community gave gifts and dined with the community of Batomelong, which is led by the Barangay Captain, Hon. Alikhan K. Bentaib.

In his message, Captain Bentaib thanked the SOCCSKSARGEN Chapter’s representatives, led by incoming President Antonio Villanueva, Jr. and Secretary-General fr. Louie R. Coronel, O.P. “Hindi po kayo nagkamali na pilian ang community ito. Kakatapos lang po ng aming Ramadan namin. Sino ba naman ang hindi matutuwa na mapili? Maraming salamat po!”

Meanwhile, UST Secretary-General fr. Louie R. Coronel, O.P. introduced the Thomasian community to the residents of Barangay “hindi lang po kami kaagapay. Mga Pilipino po tayo, at tayong lahat ay magkakapatid.”

Finally, UST Assistant to the Rector for General Santos Professor Emeritus Maribel G. Nonato, PhD expressed hope that the University’s efforts in academics and research will be of great help to the local communities of Mindanao.

The Father Rector of the ɫ, Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD, met with the former General Santos City Mayor, the Honorable Ronnel C. Rivera last, February 6.

During the brief meeting held at Rivera’s office, the Father Rector personally thanked the former head of the city for supporting UST during his term. In 2013, the land property of the University was officially assigned as institutional land, which resulted in the permission for its development into a school campus.

Situated in Barangays Ligaya and Katangawan, UST General Santos will start operations within the year in preparation for its admission of students in Academic Year 2024-2025.

Together with the Father Rector were Rev. Fr. Gerard Zabala, OP of the Dominican Filial House of San Martin de Porres, General Santos City; Academician Prof. Maribel Nonato, PhD, Assistant to the Rector for UST General Santos Campus; Mr. Levine Andro Lao of the UST Office for Grants, Endowments and Partnerships in Higher Education; and Mr. Cristian Naval of the UST Research and Endowment Foundation, Inc.

General Santos City Mayor Lorelie Geronimo Pacquiao warmly received the Father Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, OP, who paid her a courtesy visit last Feb. 6 at the City Hall.

Discussions in the meeting included the upcoming opening of the ɫ General Santos City and the establishment of scholarship grants through a possible collaboration amongUST, the Bobslor Pacquiao Foundation, and the local government.

Joining Mayor Pacquiao were her City Administrator Shandee Llido-Pestaño, Chief of Staff Atty. Hajji Herrera, and Executive Assistants Atty. Criselle Herrera, Johnrex Galdo, and Joey John Concepcion.

The UST delegation included Rev. Fr. In preparation for the upcoming opening of its satellite campus in Mindanao, the ɫ forged a partnership with the Sarangani Bay Specialists Medical Center (Sarmed) on February 5, 2023 in General Santos City.

The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of agreement, is meant to address the healthcare needs of future employees and students of UST General Santos City.

The Father Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, OP, represented UST. Meanwhile, Sarmed was represented by its President, Mr. Wilfredo Royeca. Academician Prof. Maribel Nonato, Ph.D., Assistant to the Rector for UST General Santos Campus, and Sarmed Medical Director Dr. Rizaldy Nolasco were witnesses to the contract.
