Professor Allan B. De Guzman, PhD, a gerontologist from the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education and a faculty member of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, recently published a research article entitled “Age knows no bounds: A latent content analysis of social media comments toward older adults’ engagement in sports activities.” Joining de Guzman were John Christopher B. Mesana and Jonas Airon M. Roman.

The article, published in the Journal of Applied Gerontology, a Q1 journal by SAGE Publications, recognized the engagement of older adults in sports activities and with modern technology, such engagement is easily captured on video. Looking at 62 YouTube videos featuring older adults, the qualitative study conducted a latent content analysis of 7,546 comments posted on the said videos.

The study documented the emergence of a “playing field model” that was anchored on “dualistic perspectives” of aging as engagement and aged as engaged.
