Five Thomasian health experts served as resource persons for the Committee on Trade and Industry of the House of Representatives on February 20, 2024, when a deliberation on an e-Pharmacy/e-Botika bill was being heard.

Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery academic researcher Maria Minerva P. Calimag, MD, PhD, and alumni Antonio Leachon, MD, Alfredo So, and Vicente U. Briones met with lawmakers to share their position on the bill filed by Rep. Ferjenel G. Biron.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Dean Dacanay mentioned that the group agreed to the bill, provided that provisions will be included for the protection of consumers against scrupulous e-prescriptions. Thus, safeguards on signatures, surrender of used prescriptions, and partial filling should be in place. Furthermore, the bill should clearly define legitimate online pharmacies given the proliferation of online sellers. Finally, the group advocated for an education campaign should the bill be approved.

Dacanay represented the Philippine Pharmacists Association, while Calimag spoke for the Philippine Medical Association. So is currently the President of the Consumer Healthcare Industry Association of the Philippines, while Briones heads the Drugstores Association of the Philippines. Leachon attended as a private individual in the hearing.

Ang, O.P., said that “They are indeed living treasures of the University and living examples of what the University stands for: Veritas in Caritate.”

Among the TOTAL Awards 2022 awardees is the Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula for the category Service to the Church. “My mission as a leader, educator, and researcher is actually to champion the 5Ps: the medical profession, the Philippine Medical Association, my fellow physicians and peers, my patients, and the planet,” Calimag said during the awarding ceremonies aired via Facebook Live.

The two-time former President of the Philippine Medical Association is not just a leader in the academe and medical practice, but also some who successfully navigated the shift to remote learning due to the pandemic. Part of her expertise includes capacity-building of healthcare professionals in research through digital workflows in research management. Moreover, Calimag also joins the Association of Philippine-Medical Colleges – Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and University (APMC-PAASCU) to guide the fellow medical educators on Hyflex Teaching.

The Thomasian e-learning specialist has also utilized the digital media in engaging and influencing communities, patients, and physician-peers to embrace her pharmacovigilance advocacy on promotion of drug safety and drug anti-counterfeiting initiatives.Ěý

“I engage legislators, policy-makers, barangay health workers, physicians, nurses, and pharmacists about the dangers of substandard drugs,” she said. “Itinataguyod ko ang kahalagahan kung bakit dapat ang bawat isa sa atin ay dapat maging mapanuri sa mga gamot na ating iniinom,” Calimag said. Lastly, Calimag integrates her environmental conservation advocacy in various engagements, both online and offline.

The prestigious recognition, previously conferred upon Thomasian educators like former Medicine and Surgery Dean Angeles Tan-Alora, MD, retired Chemistry Professor Emerita Assistant Dean Beatrice Q. of the talked about the important link between research and social agenda in the 2019 Discurso de Apertura (Opening Lecture), the first academic activity of the ľĹÉ« after the year was officially declared open.

The Tale of Two Rivers
Calimag’s discurso was entitled “Research and Social Agenda: The Tale of Two Rivers (Of Dead Rivers and the River of Life).” “It is my intent to poke and stir all so that by the ripples we create, we can make positive change.”

Focusing on the interconnectedness of all life, Calimag stressed that “from ancient times, nature revealed an interconnected life force to humans in the form of rhythm, patterns, and cycles.” This revelation has been neglected by humans, for “instead of protecting it, many have chosen to exploit it.”

Calimag likewise cited the second encyclical of Pope Francis, entitled “Laudato Si,” in which the Pontiff “calls the world to acknowledge the urgency of environmental challenges and join him in embarking on a new path.” Former US Vice-President Al Gore’s book An Inconvenient Truth was also mentioned for underscoring the planetary emergency known as “global warming.”

Changes and adaptation
Enumerating problems like deforestation, natural disasters, air and water pollution, mismanagemnet and abuse of resources, changing climate patterns, and the like, Calimag noted that as nature changes, so, too, do organisms like mosquitos and ticks “adapt to new environment, which lead to shifts in spatial distribution, seasonality, and incidence rates of disease…as they move to different regions.”

Pursuing the journey of a researcher
In her opening statement, Calimag reflected on what her life as a researcher brought her. “Unbridled by traditions, research has been for me a lifelong journey of discovery of who I am, of the world around me, and the meaning of life.

Calimag served as President of the country’s premier medical association, the Philippine Medical Association, from 2014-2016. She earned her medical degree in 1981 and her doctorate in educational management in 2011, both from UST.

With the theme “Gurong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad” (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng UST (Honor of UST) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

“Napakalaki ang nagawa at naiambag ng mg Tomasinong guro sa mga ma-tagumpay na Tomasino. Sigurado ako na kabilang kayo sa inspirasyon ng mga mag-aaral sa kanilang pagsusumikap na makamit at matupad ang kanilang mga pangarap. Hindi lamang iyan maliit na bagay,” Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. “Pinapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba’t-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,”

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in UST as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. “Sila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,” he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle “repeater sections” and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: “Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa UST.”

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng UST, except the Gawad Benavides).
