How can the non-ordained, the lay faithful, engage in preaching the faith? This was the question tackled in a new book chapter entitled “Towards an Inclusive Model of Eucharistic Preaching in the Catholic Church,” authored by the Institute of Religion’s Assoc. Prof. Mary Erika N. Bolaños, PhD, concurrent Principal of the Senior High School.

Engaging with Edward Hahnenberg’s insights on lay homiletics, the new work explores an inclusive model of Eucharistic preaching within the Catholic Church to examine the “evolving ecclesiology since Vatican II, emphasizing a synodal and participatory Church.” Using the experiences of lay Catholic preachers as data, Bolaños argued that these “exemplify the potential for engaging the faithful,” acknowledging diversity of charisms and pastoral adaptability, among others. Bolaños called for a broader understanding of “Eucharistic preaching beyond ordained ministry.”

The SHS Principal, who also teaches at the Institute of Preaching of the Philippine Dominican Center for Institutional Studies stated that there is a need for “responsible lay involvement in preaching, recognizing the Spirit’s call for an inclusive and authentic ministry while upholding the liturgical and sacramental integrity of the Eucharistic celebration.”

The chapter is part of the new book entitled “Lay Eucharistic Preaching in a Synodal Catholic Church,” edited by fr. Gregory Heille, O.P. of the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The book is a product of a March 2024 gathering of twenty-seven preachers and theologians, who delved into the question of whether “a synodal church in mission could make a theological case to commission a more extensive and diverse pool of qualified lay preachers and evangelists to preach the Word of God at the Eucharist.”

With the aim of furthering school-industry partnerships to ensure that senior high school students are career- and college-ready, the University’s Senior High School has entered into an agreement with the Asian Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC) for a Work Immersion Partnership for the UST-SHS Health-Allied students. The program will commence in School Year 2025-2026.

The Work Immersion Program will be delivered in a hybrid mode, with trainings and lectures about primary health care and safety services, as well as emergency nursing. In a post by AHMC, the program “aims to provide Senior High School Allied Health students with immersive, hands-on experience in a hospital setting, bridging academic learning with real-world healthcare practice.” AHMC added: “This collaboration highlights both institutions’ commitment to excellence in healthcare education, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and exposure necessary to excel in the medical field.”

The agreement was signed on March 6, 2025 (Thursday) between AHMC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Beaver R. Tamesis and UST Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH. Joining the officials were AHMC Director of Nursing Carolina P. Buhain, PhDN, MAN, RN, UST Senior High School Principal Mary Erika N. Bolaños, PhD, School Secretary Hazel A. Misola, MA, and Health-Allied Strand Chair John Ismael Medina, MA.

Assoc. Prof. Mary Erika N. Bolaños, PhD, Principal of the Senior High School and faculty member of the Institute of Religion, was one of the plenary speakers in the Fourteenth International Congress entitled “Catholics and Religious Freedom” held from November 26-27, 2021. The conference was organized by the Academy of Social and Media Culture in Torún, Regional Center of International Debates in Torún, the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, and the St. John Paul II Institute.

In her talk, Bolaños acknowledged the foundations of religious freedom—human dignity, faith, reason, and freedom of conscience—as a backdrop for the instances of modern-day martyrdom of both “named and nameless people who out of their faith and conscience shed life.” The Senior High School Principal argued that religious freedom “is the cornerstone of a society that promotes human dignity.” To this end, she argued that “a good measure of a society’s adherence to human dignity is its respect to religious freedom as the latter follows on the duty of all people to seek the truth about God. It is not a theological assertion or a religious claim of privilege— it’s a claim about what a human being is.”

Zeroing in on Catholic institutions, Bolaños said that “it is an important thing to raise a new generation of Catholics that understands the value of human dignity and the rights that root from it. Lastly, my assertion is that In our times a special obligation binds us to raise a new breed of Catholics – and this challenge is extended upon Catholic schools – that is to produce scholars, athletes, artists, scientists, leaders, and all professionals who are advocates of dignity and truth. I propose a new frame of thought challenging us to live out a new martyrdom which is a bloodless stand against the unjust and the oppressed.”

The intention of the Congress is to unveil a peculiar map of the real destruction of religious freedom in individual countries across continents and to draw attention to the cynical silence of international political bodies on this matter.

, Acting Principal of the and faculty researcher of the , presented her research paper entitled “Theological Elaboration of Missionary Catechesis from the Biblical Paul,” in the 9th International Conference on Religion and Spirituality in Society, in Granada, Spain. The conference bore the theme “Universal Religious Symbols: Mutual Influences and Specific Relationships” and was held from April 25-26, 2019.

Citing Pope Saint John Paul II, Bolaños argued that “mission is also for those baptized but have lost a living sense of the faith or those who no longer consider themselves members of the Church and live a life far removed from Christ and his Gospel.”

With the objective of presenting the Biblical Paul as model for the understanding and appreciation of Missionary Catechesis today, Bolaños cited Redemptoris Missio, which described St. Paul as someone who “spoke without inhibition to a learned assembly (Areopagus)…an audience that was intellectually and philosophically sophisticated and whose religious practices manifested a search for life’s meaning.”
