According to Dean Lopez-Kaw, the discussions with Hungarian diplomats centered on student exchanges, faculty residency, and co-advisorship of GS Law theses and dissertations. In a Facebook post by the Hungarian Embassy, they expressed optimism in “bringing together higher education institutions to maximize student and faculty potential, most especially with our Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program.”

The Graduate School of Law offers the degrees Master of Laws and Doctor of Civil Law programs online. Students from both the Philippines and abroad are welcome to apply.

UST Office of Public Affairs Director Asst. Prof. Joreen T. Rocamora, Ph.D., the Executive Assistant of the Office of Secretary-General Mr. Emmanuel Batulan, Ph.D., and the Assistant to the Director for Public Affairs Ms. Michaella O. Lagniton, welcomed the visitors.

Part of the discussions during the courtesy call included possible points of further collaboration and new scholarship opportunities. The delegation also met the UST Prefect of Libraries Rev. Fr. Ángel A. Aparicio, O.P., Assistant Prefect of Libraries and Acting Archivist Rev. Fr. Gaspar Sigaya, O.P., Miguel de Benavides Library Chief Librarian Ms. Ma. Cecilia Lobo, and Head Book Restorer Ms. Ginalyn Santiago.

Fr. Aparicio also updated the delegation with regards to the ongoing collaboration between the ��ɫ and the Embassy of Poland on the restoration of a rare first edition copy of Nicolaus Copernicus’ book on heliocentrism, which is a Polish cultural treasure housed within the UST Archives.

In a courtesy call to the Rector, the Very Rev. Father Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD, Ambassador de Souza e Silva met UST officials handling internationalization, athletics, and languages. Institute of Physical Education and Athletics Director/Regent Father Rodel S. Cansancio, O.P., International Relations and Programs Director Lilian J. Sison, PhD, and Language Center Officer-in-Charge Honorata S. Dayao, MEd presented the University’s programs to the Ambassador, who was joined by Deputy Chief of Mission Minister Sérgio Taam, Head of Political Sector Counselor Ricardo Poletto, and Head of Trade and Economic Sector First Secretary Eduardo Chikusa.

The Ambassador and his team were likewise given a tour of the UST Miguel de Benavides Library, particularly the Antonio Vivencio Heritage Library, and the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, which houses the 5,000-seater arena of the campus.

The visit, overseen by the Office of the Secretary-General and the Office of Public Affairs, is one of the first courtesy calls by the members of the Diplomatic Corps to the University since the pandemic limited mobility. Among the members of the diplomatic corps who have graced UST recently are the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, His Excellency Charles John Brown, D.D., Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, when the Apostolic Nunciature and the University co-hosted a webinar on the diplomatic relations between the Vatican and the Philippines.

Ambassador Designate of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Philippines His Excellency Vasin Ruangprateepsaeng graced the event and delivered a message, while UST Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., gave the welcome remarks.

The Ang Thong College of Dramatic Arts performed the “Pursuit of Supanna Matcha,” a masked-drama dance from the Thai national epic Ramakien, “Natnaree Sri Ayothaya,” a tribute to the beauty of Thai women and delicate style of Thai dances, and their finale, the “Rum Wong,” a dance that moves in circular manner with graceful hand movements. In turn, the ��ɫ presented the Symphony Orchestra’s “Overture to Philippine Folk Songs” and the Salinggawi Dance Troupe’s “Tinikling” and “Magandang Pilipinas.”

The event concluded with the giving of tokens, where His Excellency Vasin Ruangprateepsaeng received the “400 @ 800” coffee table book, and with an exchange of flowers among the ��ɫ, represented by UST Office of Public Affairs Director Assoc. Prof. Giovanna V. Fontanilla, Ph.D., the Royal Thai Embassy, represented by H.E. Ruangprateepsaeng, and the Ang Thong College of Dramatic Arts, represented by its Director Mr. Witoon Poonsawat.

The event was coordinated through the efforts of the Office of Public Affairs and the Royal Thai Embassy, with Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission Ms. Urawadee Sriphiromya, who previously spoke on “Learning Mobility in the Context of ASEAN Integration” at the 5th discourse of the UST Ambassadors Lecture Series.

In his message, Kingdom of Belgium Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Michel Philippe Goffin said the exhibition is in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of the war that changed the world. As an example, Goffin cited the United Nations, an international system created to prevent another world war in Europe and in the European Union.

“There is a tendency of certain countries to return to nationalism, which poses now a real threat to United Nations system,” Goffin said. “This is a real danger that we highlight here.”

The photo exhibition is in remembrance of  soldiers from all over the world, who were sent to the Belgian front lines. This exhibit was mounted in partnership with the UST .
