The complementarity of disciplinal expertise will be strengthened through further collaboration in the University with the soon-to-rise UST-Dr. William T. Belo Interdisciplinary Research Institute, the second edifice to rise in the UST Research and Innovation Complex in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

On January 14, 2025, University Rector and Research and Endowment Foundation, Inc. (REFI) President fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD signed the memorandum of agreement with Dr. Belo, who consolidated support from Wilcon Corporation, Anstay Reality and Development Corporation, Markeenlo Realty, Inc., and Adije Realty and Development Corporation, to fund the four-storey institute with twenty-five laboratories.

In attendance were REFI officials led by Executive Director fr. Louie R. Coronel, O.P., as well as UST officials led by the Vice-Rector for Finance, fr. Roberto L. Luanzon, Jr., O.P., SThD, DL, Facilities Management Office Director fr. Dexter A. Austria, O.P., Assistant to the Rector for UST Santa Rosa Philipina A. Marcelo, PhD, Office for Grants, Endowments, and Partnerships in Higher Education Director Levine Andro H. Lao, MA, Executive Assistant for UST Santa Rosa Seigfred Prado, PhD, Project Management Assistant Shikara Poblete-Jose, MSc, and Facilities Management Office Assistant Director Albert Surla, MSc. Joining Dr. Belo were Wilcon Depot, Inc. President and CEO Lorraine Belo-Cincochan and Executive Vice-President and Chief Product Officer Careen Belo. Legal counsel Atty. Sheila Pasicolan was also in attendance.

With a total ground floor area of 1,555.83 square meters, the facility will provide much-needed room for UST’s research activities, which are currently done in the Manila campus. With the added space, the various research centers will have counterpart spaces to pursue studies on the following areas: food security and safety, health and well-being, environmental sustainability, energy, information and communications, and materials and product innovation. The institute is expected to be completed in December 2025.

In 2024, UST was hailed as the country’s top higher education institution for Interdisciplinary Science Rankings by Times Higher Education. Earlier that year, on January 26, 2024, the project broke ground, a few meters away from the UST-Dr. Tony Tan Caktiong Innovation Center.

Dr. Belo is one of UST’s most decorated alumni. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electronics and communications engineering in 1973, was named The Outstanding Thomasian ALumni awardee for Engineering Practice in 2022, and was conferred the Doctor of Commerce, honoris causa degree, in September 2023.

Engr. John Paul 鈥淛P鈥 Pe, BS Civil Engineering Alumnus Class 1987 and former President of the 九色 Engineering Alumni Association, Inc. (USTEAAI), gave the first tranche of his gift to the University to fit-out the chapel at the UST-Dr. Tony Tan Caktiong Innovation Center (UST-TTCIC) in UST Santa Rosa on June 21, 2024.聽 The gift was received by Prof. Philipina A. Marcelo, PhD, the Assistant to the Rector for UST Santa Rosa, on behalf of the UST Research & Endowment Foundation, Inc. (REFI).聽

The 65-square-meter chapel with sacristy and vestibule is located at the ground floor of the UST-TTCIC. It can accommodate up to 50 persons at a time. It will cater not only to the occupants of the building and the campus but also to the communities around UST Santa Rosa. The project includes an altar wall of natural marble stone and travertine stone as well as customized set of pews, designed with the Thomasian stamp.

Engr. Pe (CE Class of 1987) is the owner of Archipelago Builders Corporation, a category AAA construction company.  He served as President of the USTEAAI in 2018-2019 and an active member of Couples for Christ with his wife.  He remained an active supporter of USTEAAI and of the Faculty of Engineering after his stint as President.  He is also the proud father of Engr. Paolo Pe (CE Class of 2015) who played with the UST Basketball Team for five years. 鈥淚 am grateful to the University for this opportunity to assist in its long-term plan.  The plan for UST-TTCIC is very good, and I am happy to be a part of it,鈥 Engr. JP Pe said.

The UST-TTCIC is a facility that provides the venue in transitioning the Research & Innovation outputs of UST researchers to commercialization.  It shall provide the venue in which the University makes available a range of expert and technical services to business owners among UST stakeholders with particular attention to the micro- small- and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs).  As such, it will house the Center for Research Commercialization and Entrepreneurship, which will include the TOMASInno Center (TIC) – the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) of the University. 鈥淲ith the University鈥檚 vision for UST-TTCIC鈥檚 role in our long-term plans to take Research & Innovation to the next level, it is important for us that the first fit-out project in the building is one that involves giving thanks to God and reaching out to our new community in praise of God. We didn鈥檛 have to explain this in many words to Engr. Pe. He was immediately on board,鈥 Prof. Marcelo said.

A group of UST officials met with Engr. Pe at the UST-TTCIC for a walk-through and to explain the design of the chapel.  They were pleasantly surprised when Engr. Pe handed them his gift in the middle of the discussion.  The UST Santa Rosa Team was composed of Prof. Marcelo and Engr. Shikara P. Poblete-Jose, MSc (Project Management Assistant). They were joined by the project designer, Ar. Paulo Cabatit of the Facilities Management Office (FMO). 鈥淚 hope that more Thomasians, especially Thomasian engineers, could be given the opportunity to be a part of the development of UST Santa Rosa and the whole UST, particularly in showing their expertise as builders.  We are ready to help,鈥 Engr. Pe said.

The conducted a seminar titled 鈥淓vidence-Based Functional Tests鈥 held on December 15, 2018 at the St. Martin de Porres Building, UST. The resource speaker was CRS alumnus Mr. Paul Christian Rivera, who is currently affiliated with Suncrest Home Health, an Almost Family Company working as Physical Therapist specializing in Geriatrics. Thirteen licensed physical therapists attended the seminar and learned the basic principles of functional tests and how to use the current and evidence-based functional assessment tools in geriatric population.

The speaker introduced and demonstrated several functional tests to the participants such as the four- square step test, Montreal cognitive assessment, 30-second chair stand test, two-minute step in place and many more. These tests measured balance, gait speed, cognition and strength of an individual. To ensure that the participants learned, the speaker asked the participants to administer the tests themselves and let them watch several videos on how to use those tests.

The seminar participants who were mostly practicing physical therapists, learned the importance of a more objective and measurable way of assessing geriatric patients with different types of impairments. Moreover, the seminar gave them the knowledge and skills in using evidence-based functional tests among geriatric patients which can lead to the improvement of the practice.

鈥淣early two decades ago in 1999, Ms. Kim Lamigo, a student almost missed her graduation ceremonies because of financial constraints, had it not been for the good heart of Assoc. Prof. Milagros Del Callar, the head of the Department of Biological Sciences, who allowed the Department to lend her money so she could enrol.鈥 This is a recount from the incumbent chair of the , .

Lamigo, who is now based in Montana, USA saw the experience as contributory to her success. She then thought of giving back to UST by raising funds to help students under the BS Microbiology program who are in need of financial assistance. This was made possible through the help of her batch mates who are one with her in acknowledging the efforts of their teachers in honing them and in making them who they are today. The worthwhile experiences they had under the tutelage of their professors, , in particular, did not make them have any reservations to realize this altruistic endeavor.

Dela Cruz, therefore, is instrumental in making this undertaking possible. Through him and with Dr. Rachel Lee-Chua together with the Biology Department chair Dr. Papa, the agreement was drafted. Under the auspices of BS Microbiology Batch 1999, PhP100,000.00 was donated to the 九色 for a scholarship fund specifically for BS Microbiology students.

The scholarship program is part of the College of Science鈥檚 Project Agham. Initially, the scholarship program is offered to one freshman and one graduating student for the second term of the A.Y. 2018-2019. Those who will be chosen shall enjoy free tuition and miscellaneous fees for the said term.

To qualify, a student must meet the following requirements: a GWA not lower than 2.25 in the previous term (Term 1, A.Y. 2018-2019); total annual family income not exceeding PhP 300,000; enrolment paid through instalment basis; not a concurrent recipient of any major scholarship or financial aid, and physically fit. A letter of intent must be emailed in pdf format to biology.sci@ust.edu.ph, addressed to Department of Biological Sciences Department Chair Dr. Papa. The aspirants shall be subject to an interview by the Committee on Scholarship, College of Science. Passing grades without failures allow the recipients to continuously enjoy the scholarship.

At the moment, the scholarship is on a per term basis. The donors promised to maintain their contribution to sustain the scholarship program in the succeeding terms. It is said that, 鈥渁 teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.鈥 Faculty members Del Callar and Dela Cruz have been inspirations to their students who like Kim Lamigo successfully made it through life because of her mentors鈥 sense of commitment, competence, and compassion.
