Times Higher Education recently released in 2025 Impact Rankings, which saw UST take the #2 spot among Philippine private universities. UST ranked in the #3 bracket or the 601-800, sharing the spot with Saint Louis University Baguio as well as state universities in Caraga, Ifugao, Leyte, and Ilocos Norte.

UST’s strongest suit was Sustainable Development Goal #5 – Gender Equality, which saw a jump from the 301-400th ranking in 2024. Next were Life Below Water (SDG 14) at 201-300th, Quality Education (SDG 4) at 301-400th and Reduced Inequalities at 301-400th.

While UST’s rank has held steady since 2021, it has shown improvement in the overall score. The latest edition ranks 2,526 universities from 130 countries or territories based on their contributions to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the THE website, Asian universities “claim more than half of all places in the rankings, and 10 out of the 17 individual SDGs rankings are now led by an Asian university.”

In a solemn conferment rite on May 1, 2024, UST Rector Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P. PhD received the Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, from the University of Notre Dame Australia in Sydney. The conferment coincided with the UNDA Graduation Ceremony.

UNDA Chancellor Christopher Ellison praised the UST Rector for his steadfast commitment to Catholic higher education, steering the University through the pandemic immediately after taking helm of UST on January 1, 2020 (first as Acting Rector), then on May 7, 2020, formally as Rector.

In a message to the UNDA graduating class, Fr. Ang extended the arm of friendship and collaboration, expressing optimism that the UNDA graduates will soon make changes in their own communities.

The pandemic shifted not just instructional delivery but also University operations to distance and eventually hybrid modality. The former was recognized by the Commission on Higher Education with the prestigious Gawad Edukampyon, which feted UST’s Excellence in Flexible and Responsive Management.

While steering the University through the pandemic, Fr. Ang continued UST’s leadership of the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities as Executive Secretary.

Rising above the pandemic, Fr. Ang led the University in inaugurating the General Santos Campus on April 11, 2024 and in opening the UST Manila Annex in Santa Rosa, Laguna, first with the UST-Dr. Tony Tan Caktiong Innovation Center on April 28, 2023.

As he pushes through with his second term, the Rector leads a University that is globally recognized, with more and more programs deemed at par with international counterparts. Research and innovation as well as community service have likewise been intensified, with the aim of contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

A philosopher, Fr. Ang specializes in Chinese philosophy. He teaches courses at the Faculty of Philosophy, where he was Dean while concurrently serving as University Vice-Rector.

What does modern occupational therapy practice in the Philippines demand of professionals in terms of ethical behavior? In a new book chapter by Routledge, Occupational Therapy academic staff Assoc. Prof. Kim Gerald G. Medallon, PhD, OTRP and co-author Caroline Fischl look into the Philippine Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and the theoretical foundations and key ethical principles that guide prevailing expectations.

The chapter elucidates the obligations of professionals to clients, as well as to the profession, education, research, and society. With reflection questions and case studies, the chapter “offers a valuable guide for OT professionals to effectively navigate and resolve ethical dilemmas in Philippine contexts.”

The book chapter is part of the new book “Occupational Therapy in the Philippines: Theory, Practice, and Stories” by Routledge. It was edited by Michael Sy, Roi Charles Pineda, and Caroline Fischl.

Medallon has published studies on “Inclusive classrooms: Making it work for peers of children with disability” (with Asst. Prof. Karen S. Sagun and Asst. Prof. Allan James Tan) and “Attitude development from the perspectives of occupational therapy interns and clinical educators.” Formerly the Internship Supervisor for the BS Occupational Therapy program of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, he is the Assistant to the Director of the Center for Innovative Teaching and Educational Delivery.
