UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy Assistant Dean Asst. Prof. Francisco M. Caliwan, Jr., MSPA, MBA and BS Accounting Information System Chair Mr. Louie Gene G. Marasigan delivered lectures to the accounting educators during the Western Visayas Regional Forum organized by the National Association of Certified Public Accountants in Education (NACPAE) at the Central Philippine University, Iloilo City on March 8, 2025.

Caliwan delivered the lecture entitled The Teachers’ Roles in Addressing the Competency Gap Between the Classroom and the Workplace. He emphasized the vital roles of accounting teachers in preparing students for success in the workplace. He discussed that while the university prepares the individual for the initial professional development needed in the workplace, the workplace should further develop the individual through continuing professional development. He also shared some of the competency gaps identified by the industry partners and provided possible solutions to address them. In the end, Caliwan explained that the University and the workforce each play significant roles in individuals’ personal and professional development.

Meanwhile, Marasigan shared his expertise in Advanced Excel Techniques tailored for accounting teachers. He provided in-depth discussion on powerful tools and functions that enhance data analysis, automate calculations, and streamline grade computations—equipping educators with the skills to improve their teaching efficiency and elevate student learning. These Excel techniques are essential for modern accounting instruction, ensuring accuracy, productivity, and a deeper understanding of financial data.

The Western Visayas Regional Forum is the last leg of the provincial fora organized by NACPAE. In June 2025, NACPAE will close the current fiscal year with a national conference in Baguio City.

On November 28, 2023, writer and human rights activist Ninotchka Rosca talked about social realist fiction and the writers’ mission in the Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies (CCWLS) International Author and Scholar lecture series held at the Civil Law auditorium.

Writers in time of a crumbling society

Rosca stated that FilIpinos yearn for completeness that can be found elsewhere and ignores the reality of a system that is specific to resistance and the realities of revolution. She prescribes what the writers should do in times of crisis where society is pulled in various directions due to divisiveness. “We should document the narrative of our times because time with a capital “T” is almost always the major character of any work of fiction. Second, we must try weave a cohesive narrative from all the [threads] of our histories, noting man to all the changes that there is still that great national ‘I am’ that cannot be eradicated. Third, we must resist the constant push for writers to dream upon idealized alternative [world] like Wakanda,” she said, highlighting that we must not turn away and replace our reality with fantasy.

“Our prime responsibility and our prime mission is to inspire these generation, and the next generation to believe that another world is possible,” Rosca said.

Between solitude and mobilization

According to Rosca, to be a writer and an activist is a huge contradiction, a tug-of-war between solitude and mobilization. “Writing is solitary ,and you do not write with committees. You sit at your desk and write,” she said. “Activism is socialized undertaking. You have to be with people, you have to move people, you have to mobilize,” she added.

Rosca is the author of “State of War”, “Sugar and Salt”, and “Stories of a Bitter Country”.

A lecture entitled Baoulan to Kadurog: Histories of Life and Loss in Philippine Freshwaters was held on September 8, 2023 at the College of Science. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Anthony Medrano of the National University of Singapore, a science historian who specializes in biodiversity studies. Medrano has been appointed as a Presidential Young Professor of Environmental Studies of Yale-NUS College and an Assistant Professor at the NUS Department of History.

Medrano’s talk focused on the extinction of Lake Lanao’s 15 endemic cyprinid fishes from the genus Barbodes, including the highly prized Barbodes baoulan which was eventually traced to the proliferation of an invasive fish species, Glossogobius giuris. The latter was introduced to the lake during the 1960s to augment local fisheries. As a historian, Medrano also provided perspectives on the history of the discovery of the endemic cyprinids of Lake Lanao, including the scientists who discovered the said species and documented the decline of Lake Lanao’s biodiversity.

The lecture was attended by undergraduate and graduate students in Biology as well as select faculty members of the Department of Biological Sciences. The event was organized by undergraduate BS Biology major in Medical Biology students under 2MBio3 as part of their General Ecology (Bio 426) class under the supervision of Dean Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD.

The ¾ÅÉ« College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (UST-CTHM), in collaboration with the M.I.C.E Classes of 3HCE1–Zarkana Productions and 3HCE3—Marahuyo Productions, hosted the 12th Saint Hyacinth Students’ Research Colloquium and Lecture, which featured two international hotel and tourism professors. The experts emphasized that flexible research methods can remedy post-pandemic setbacks in the tourism industry, held on April 24, 2023 as part of the 5-day Philippine International Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference 2023 (PITH-ReCon 2023).

In her talk entitled “Redefining Hospitality Business Management in the Next Norm,†Prof. Cathy Hsu from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management said that a “comprehensive and rigorous†qualitative approach in topics such as post-pandemic consumer behavior validates research findings.

Additionally, qualitative research is uncommon in the tourism industry with a decreased credibility unlike in anthropological and sociological areas, as highlighted by Prof. Jerome Agrusa from the University of Hawaii, in his talk entitled “Redefining Tourism on the Next Norm.†Agrusa urged flexibility among research approaches that shared four constructs such as truth value, applicability, consistency, and neutrality to remedy over-tourism and promote regenerative tourism, a trend of sharing one goal. Flexible research approaches can ensure tourism sustainability and viability from economic downturns such as exploitation of destinations and workers, he added.

Citing the eye-tracking and facial expression analysis, Hsu also highlighted the credibility of quantitative research due to its objective approach to determine the psychophysiological methods over qualitative approaches such as interviews and surveys. She also warned against a potential inaccuracy of qualitative methods, as it is only limited to subjective emotions.

The lectures were part of the weeklong Philippine International Tourism and Hospitality Research Conference 2023 (PITH-ReCon 2023).
