Assoc. Prof. Antonio P. Africa, PhD, immediate past Dean of the Conservatory of Music, was appointed to a four-year term as Member of the Technical Panel for Music of the Commission on Higher Education.

Africa will serve from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2028. In a Facebook post, Africa stated that he is “excited to contribute to the program’s roadmap, responsive and relevant to the needs of the institutions I will be working with, all the other music institutions, and my beloved alma mater, UST Conservatory of Music.”

UST’s Conservatory of Music, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, is a recognized Center of Excellence by CHED. Under Africa’s leadership, the Conservatory was able to steer through the pandemic while also offering new programs and specializations, such as Music Technology. To date, the Conservatory community accumulates recognitions here and abroad.

Two members of the academic staff of the College of Nursing were recently elected to serve as officers of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) – Zone 1 Manila Chapter.

Asst. Prof. Ritzmond Loa, who serves as the College’s Internationalization Coordinator, was elected to the Board of Directors. Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Carina Rebueno was elected to the House of Delegates.

PNA was established in 1922. The Manila Chapter is the group of professionals residing or working in the capital.

Assoc. Prof. Richard Thomas B. Pavia, Jr., PhD, academic researcher of the Department of Biological Sciences and the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences, was elected to a three-year term as President of the Federation of Institutions of Marine and Freshwater Sciences (FIMFS) during the organization’s convention in October 2024 at Davao Oriental State University.

Pavia, the immediate past Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, has worked on non-native aquatic organisms and non-native freshwater fish species. In 2023, he published an article warning about the risk of non-native fishes invading due to climate change, with Lake Taal as the study site. Recently, he co-authored the article “Development and application of a second-generation multilingual tool for invasion risk screening of non-native terrestrial plants.”

First chartered in 1968, FIFMS now has over twenty-three members comprised of both public and private higher education institutions. The federation provides an avenue for greater collaboration among members through collaborative research undertakings and the sharing of expertise and resources.

The ɫ, through the Graduate School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics, was elected to the lead position of the Secretariat of the Asia-Pacific Higher Education Network for Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage (APHEN-ICH). This significant development was announced during the Intangible Cultural Heritage International Conference and General Meeting at Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal, on September 22-23, 2024.

The APHEN-ICH Secretariat is composed of four member universities: ɫ as the lead together with the bureau members; University of Dhaka in Bangladesh for South Asia, Vietnam National University-Hanoi in Vietnam for Southeast Asia, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in South Korea for East/North Asia.

USTGS-CCCPET, with its wealth of experience and expertise, will serve for two years as the Secretariat of APHEN-ICH. Assoc. Prof. Eric B. Zerrudo, PhD, the Executive Director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Program Lead of the UST Graduate School – Cultural Heritage Studies, will serve as the Head of the Secretariat alongside CCCPET Officer-in-Charge Ms. Beverly Macayan-Bautista, MAED, who will serve as the International Coordinator of the network. In this role, USTGS-CCCPET will be instrumental in orchestrating the activities and programs of the network, ensuring its seamless operation and the effective execution of its mission.

The election of the USTGS-CCCPET was grounded on its successful hosting of the Intangible Cultural Heritage International Conference and APHEN-ICH Field School in the Philippines with the City Government of Mabalacat and other LGU partners in the Pampanga province last 2023.

APHEN-ICH, a collaborative initiative established in September 2018 in partnership with the International Information and Networking Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia Pacific Region (ICHCAP) under the auspices of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), stands as a testament to the joint dedication to preserving intangible cultural heritage in the Asia-Pacific. Aligned with the 2003 UNESCO Convention, the network is focused on nurturing and reinforcing this capacity through joint programs and activities to promote the 2003 Convention for Intangible Cultural heritage. As of 2024, the network proudly counts 23 member universities in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Four academic researchers of the Department of Chemistry were recently elected to as members of the Board of Directors of the Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas.

Academician Professor Emeritus Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD and Professor Christina A. Binag, PhD were elected to a three-year term (2025-2028), while Department of Chemistry Chair Alan Rodelle M. Salcedo, PhD was elected to a two-year term (2025-2027). Finally, Assoc. Prof. Felicidad Christina Peñafiel, PhD was elected to a one-year term (2025-2026).

The Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (Chemical Society of the Philippines) is an 85-year-old society of chemists. It publishes scholarly articles in Kimika and regularly hosts conferences and scientific activities.

Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao, PhD, the Chair of the Department of English and Program Lead of the Graduate School English Language Cluster, has been elected as the President of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP), the premier linguistics organization of the country.

Lintao has been elected to lead the 55-year old organization from 2024 to 2027. She was Vice President in 2021-2024 and Treasurer from 2018-2021. She is at the helm of the 12-member board of directors who are from varied institutions and organizations in the country and abroad, namely, De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of the Philippines Diliman, Ateneo de Zamboanga, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Hawaii in Hilo, and Summer Institute of Linguistics.

Lintao is the fourth LSP president from UST. The former presidents include Asst. Prof. Anna Maria Gloria Ward, Prof. Marilu Madrunio, PhD, and Prof. Alejandro S. Bernardo, PhD who are all from the Department of English. Ward and Madrunio currently sit in the LSP board.

Lintao’s research interests include forensic linguistics. Among her recent publications are “Power, Control, and Resistance in Philippine and American Police Interview Discourse” (co-authored with Ma. Kaela Joselle R. Madrunio) and “Readability and comprehensibility of Malaysian construction contracts” (co-authored with Noushad Ali Naseem Ameer Ali).

Two Thomasian faculty researchers have been elected to the Chemical Sciences Division of the National Research Council of the Philippines. Department of Chemistry faculty researcher Jolleen Natalie I. Balitaan, RCh, LPT, PhD was elected Secretary for the period of 2024-2026, while Department of Biochemistry faculty researcher Oliver B. Villaflores, PhD was elected Chair of the Organic and Biological Chemistry section of the Division.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Balitaan disclosed that the Division of Chemical Sciences includes as its main thrusts empowering members “who are globally and highly respected researchers” and continuing “strong linkages with local and international scientific organizations for enhanced cooperation in the development and sharing of scientific information, responsible community leaders in ensuring environment protection, food safety and public health.”

Balitaan’s recent studies have focused “on the development of bio-inspired and biomimetic materials for anticorrosion, antibacterial, antibiofilm, wound healing and sensor applications.”

Both Balitaan and Villaflores are affiliated with the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

Several academic staff of the UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy were appointed as members to the Professional Regulatory Board of Accountancy’s (PRBOA) Technical Working Group (TWG) on the Certified Public Accountants Licensure Examination (CPALE) Enhancement Project.

Dean Patricia M. Empleo, PhD was appointed as Chair of the TWG on Business Environment and Concepts, while Assistant Dean Francisco M. Caliwan, Jr., MSPA, and Assoc. Prof. Antonio J. Dayag, PhD were appointed as Members of the TWG on Financial Accounting and Reporting. Moreover, Asst. Prof. Enrico D. Tabag and Atty. Tristan L. Lopez were appointed as Members of TWG on Tax Compliance and Planning, while Inst. Francisco H. Villamin, Jr. DBA was appointed as Member of the TWG on Auditing and Attestation. The TWG members took their oath on December 18, 2023 at the PRC Office, Philippine International Convention Center.

The TWG is taked to revise the syllabi and table of specifications of the Philippine CPALE and align it with the examination given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Currently, the AICPA examination is comprised of two modules called core and discipline. The core module contains three compulsory parts (courses), namely: Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) and Regulation (REG). The disciple module contains three optional parts (courses), namely: Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Control (ISC) and Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP). Philippine examinees will take all six. The AICPA-based examination is set to be given starting the October 2028 CPALE.

Department of Electrical Engineering Chair Engr. Carlito M. Gutierrez, MSc was elected as the chair of Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) Commission on Engineering and Architecture. He will serve at the helm of the Commission until 2024.

PAASCU is the local accrediting agency that checks the quality of Engineering programs of UST. It has conferred the highest accreditation level, Level III, to all six bachelor’s degree programs in engineering: Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial, and Mechanical.

No stranger to external appointments, Gutierrez has also served as Member of the Technical Committee for Electrical Engineering of the Commission on Higher Education.

Inst. Kane Errol C. Choa, MA, MSc, APR of the Department of Communication and Media Studies was named as the new chief of International Association of Business Communicators Asia Pacific Region (IABC APAC). Previously, he served as the institution’s vice chair and awards director. Choa assumed his new post on July 1, 2023.

At present, he also serves as the vice president of ABS-CBN’s Corporate Communications.

Apart from his role in media institutions, Choa is an educator in the Faculty of Arts and Letters, where he teaches Broadcast Journalism in the said department.

Composed of 11 chapters in 8 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, IABC APAC organizes the Fusion regional conference, the Silver Quill Awards, and the Communicator of the Year Awards.

Meanwhile, IABC is a recognized professional association that links communicators worldwide belonging to diverse industries and disciplines, aiming to seek and to deliver the world’s best communication practices.
