Thomasian researchers, in an effort to advance Service-Learning (SL) towards its institutionalization, participated in the 4th International Conference on Service-Learning (ICSL) 2022, organized by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) from November 16 to 18, 2022.

Asst. Prof. Froilan Alipao of the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) Sociology Department, Assoc. Prof. Evalyn Abiog of the AB Department of English, Assoc. Prof. Melanie Turingan of the AB History Department, Prof. Ma. Teresa Tricia Guison-Bautista of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, and Ms. Heiden Anorico of the National Service Training Program presented their research during the conference.
Alipao presented his paper “AraLinkCoD: A proposed Service-Learning praxis framework of UST vis-à-vis the Salamanca Process.” In his presentation, he introduced the see-judge-act method involved in the Salamanca Process that can guide Catholic higher education institutions such as UST in their Service-Learning delivery.
In her paper “Pedagogical Approaches and Methods in Service-Learning: A Multiple-Case Study,” Abiog presented the Service-Learning pedagogies in four undergraduate courses: 1) 九色 Outreach at the Conservatory of Music, 2) 九色 Health in Medical Technology at the Faculty of Pharmacy, 3) 九色 Health Nursing at the College of Nursing, and 4) Math in the Modern World at the College of Science. She described these SL courses as exploratory, transformative, social constructivist, and research-based.
Turingan presented her paper “Service-Learning in the 九色: From Theory to Practice.” In her presentation, Turingan accentuated the expressive, artistic, transformative, and social constructivist application of SL in the curricula rooted in experiential learning.
To highlight the Service-Learning initiatives of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Guison-Bautista presented two papers titled the “Analysis on the attitudes of medical faculty and students towards community service-learning activities” and “Dimensions of a culturally-sensitive community service attitude scale for Filipino medical students.”
Ms. Heiden Anorico of the NSTP presented her paper on “eService-Learning: Understanding college students’ online community engagement in the time of pandemic.” Anorico shared students’ online community engagement according to the eService-Learning Triad which are: 1) the Area of Cognizance, 2) the Area of Connection, and 3) the Area of Concern. These areas encompass students’ online environment, issues, and discourse.
Alipao, Abiog, Turingan, and Anorico are research associates of the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED), while Guison-Bautista is affiliated with the UST Research Center for the Health Sciences (RCHS).
The 4th International Conference on Service-Learning (ICSL) 2022 was part of the 85th founding anniversary of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which was attended by academics, scholars, and students in a hybrid setup.

“Sundays with Domingo” was co-authored by Asst. Prof. Pia Patricia P. Tenedero, Ph.D. of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and missionary priest Fr. Dom Flores, SVD. Inspired by Mitch Albom’s international best-seller Tuesdays with Morrie, Tenedero co-narrates the adventures of the 90-year-old Filipino Divine Word missionary from Abra to Australia. Pia and Fr. Dom met and became friends during her four-year stay at the SVD-owned student accommodation in Marsfield, New South Wales during her PhD candidature.

The pocket-sized vocation storybook was virtually launched on September 4, 2022 in an intimate Zoom gathering that brought together the authors’ family and friends from the Philippines, Australia, and the United States. Among those who graced the event are Asst. Prof. Ailil Alvarez (Director of the UST Publishing House), Fr. Viet Nguyen, SVD (SVD Australia Province Mission Secretary), Fr. Randy Flores, SVD (Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart Parish Shrine in Kamuning, Quezon City), and Fr. Tony Moreno, SJ (former Provincial Superior of the Philippine Jesuit and current President of the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific). Both Fr. Randy and Fr. Tony are nephews of Fr. Dom. Pia’s cousins from the Diocese of San Jose, California were also present—Fr. Mike Gazzingan and Fr. Mark Gazzingan, who attended the UST Central Seminary and UST Graduate School, respectively.

This personal collaboration is also a charity mission. All proceeds from the book sales will support several charity and vocation initiatives in the Philippines and Australia. The primary beneficiaries are the Alternative Learning Systems run by the Arnold Janssen Catholic Mission Foundation, Inc. for out-of-school youth, indigenous communities, and the elderly in Tagaytay, and the reconstruction of a temporary chapel for the parishioners of the St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Tayum, Abra, that was heavily damaged by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on July 27, 2022. A portion of the book sales in Australia will be allocated to various vocation and charity projects of the SVD Australia Mission Office.

Tenedero’s first non-academic book project was part of Logos Publications’ new titles. It is also available through Shopee and Lazada for only Php 150.

The Hospitality Department of the UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, celebrated the World Chefs Week with the theme “Growing a Healthy Future” from October 19 to 21, 2022, at the Albertus Magnus Building and via Zoom.

Chef Vanessa Marquis, the International World Chefs Day Committee Chairman, gave a short message to kickstart the anticipated celebration. As Chef Marquis mentioned, “Be kind with one another. Be kind with Mother Nature. And be sure to continue to share our noble profession with as many people as possible.”

CTHM celebrated this year’s chefs week by conducting various activities to showcase the culinary prowess of both second year and third year Hospitality Management students. Events for the celebration were not just exclusive to the CTHM community but were also extended to external participants.

Throughout the week, the Philippine Young Chefs Club (PYCC) made onsite promotions for building industry connections and introducing the world of culinary competitions to the students.

On the second day of Chefs Week, kids below 10 years old were invited to participate in “Feed the World: Growing a Healthy Future.” In this event, the kids attended a healthy cooking workshop where they, together with their parents, followed along with a cooking demonstration provided by UST’s very own award-winning chef instructor – Chef Kristian Roque.

Another activity during the week-long festivity was the FiliFusion Showdown where students from Specialty Cuisine and Philippine Regional Cuisine elective were tasked to come up with a contemporary spin on traditional Filipino dishes fused with foreign cuisines. Serving as the panel of judges were UST Chef Instructors Chef Fhamela Sarmiento and Chef Maria Labay, and the award-winning Chef Lawrenz Dela Cruz.

World Chefs Day is celebrated all over the world in the month of October. The celebration highlights the culinary profession with the goal of promoting a healthy future for everyone.

The UST Publishing House (USTPH) spotlighted its new releases and upcoming titles at its annual Christmas book sale, which took place both online through Lazada and Shopee, and on campus at the UST Bookstore from December 1 to 15, 2022.

Its new releases became available at discounted prices, beginning with the latest creative nonfiction titles in its shelves: “Easy Listening,” a collection of personal musings from veteran journalist Nestor Cuartero on culture, the arts, and the pleasures of the quotidian; and “From Manila to the World,” which unfolds Paolo Mangahas’ adventures in 10 different locations, through the author’s thoughtful and authentic voice.

“Life in a Flash: Stories” edited by Rhona Lopa-Macasaet is an electrifying addition to the USTPH’s fiction category. It is among the few books on the innovative genre of flash fiction in the country. Also joining the creative exploration of the genre is “Maikling Walang Hanggan” by Rommel Rodriguez, which has been translated for the first time in Japanese as「短き永遠」by Sawada Masanobu. This work is one of two USTPH titles accepted in the 2022 National Book Development Board (NBDB) Translation Subsidy Program (the other being “Ilustrado” by Miguel Syjuco, translated in Filipino by Chuckberry J. Pascual).

Coming soon in fiction is “Kathang Haka: The Big Book of Fake News,” an anthology of short fiction edited by Dean Francis Alfar, Nikki Alfar, and Louie Jon A. Sanchez, which imaginatively responds to the perversions of truth in contemporary Philippine society through storytelling.

Latest in the nonfiction category is “Honora Medicum: 150 Years of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, the First School of Medicine in the Philippines,” the UST FMS 150 commemorative book, which is meant to celebrate the “mother” of all medical schools in the country, to pay tribute to the 50,000 UST doctors and their extraordinary impact on society and honor the generations of doctor-teachers.

In the Theology and Philosophy category, the USTPH has released “Faith and Reason in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition” by Joel C. Sagut, which ruminates on the tensions between faith and reason, and their ultimate mutuality in Catholic thought. Renowned Filipino scholar Alfredo P. Co’s new work, “Doing Philosophy in the Philippines: The Thomasian Collection (1951-1959) Volume II,” was also recently released and launched alongside its first volume, which both collect scholarly articles on the condition of Filipino philosophy, and the trajectories of humanistic thought in the Catholic intellectual tradition. Joining them is “Faith and Psychology: A Walk-Through on the Filipino Basic Ecclesial Communities” by Milagros C. Arrevillaga, a close look into Philippine ecclesial communities and the psychology of communal living rooted in faith.

Esteemed fictionist Cecilia Manguerra Brainard is set to release the collection “Growing Up Filipino 3: New Stories for Young Adults,” the third in a series of short fiction which tackles the unique yet universal experience of childhood and its reiterations in memory, craft, and Filipino culture.

Also coming soon on the bookstore’s shelves are the following anthologies: “Bayan-Bayanan: Antolohiya ng mga Katha sa Lunan ng Gunita,” edited by Rolando B. Tolentino and Rommel B. Rodriguez, which gathers short stories on home, land, and origin, and their inextricable link to memory and personhood; and two creative nonfiction titles, “Aruga: Mga Sanaysay ng Pagtanggap at Paglingap,” co-edited by Rodriguez with Ferdinand Pisigan Jarin, a collection of personal essays that draw from the unique articulations of “care” in Filipino culture; and “The Lives of a Filipino/a High School Student: Anthology of Personal Essays on High School in the Philippines,” (which Jarin co-edited with Rolando B. Tolentino and Joselito De Los Reyes) providing an intimate look into the Filipino high school experience, one that is marked by explorations and transformations on relationships and identity, contextualized within the country’s tumultuous educational and social condition.

Finally, master musicologist and UST Research Center for Culture, Arts, and the Humanities (RCCAH) Director Maria Alexandra Chua will soon release “Julio Nakpil Collected Works Volume I: Piano, Vocal, and Chamber Music,” a landmark work that compiles the extant music of renowned Filipino composer, Julio Nakpil, including some of his earliest musical pieces that were printed, published, and circulated in the late nineteenth-century Spanish colonial Manila.

These new and upcoming titles were available for the first time during the USTPH annual Christmas Book Sale. They are available at the UST Bookstore and its online bookstores at Shopee and Lazada.

In time for the Museums and Galleries Month 2022, the Diocese of Tagbilaran and the Parish of the Immaculate Conception in Baclayon, in collaboration with the 九色 Graduate School – Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics officially reopened on October 14, 2022, the eve of the ninth anniversary of the 7.2 magnitude Bohol earthquake.

The Museo Parroquial de Baclayon: Tagbilaran Diocesan Museum of Liturgical Arts is located at a section of the old convent of one of the oldest churches in the country, the La Purisima Concepcion de la Virgen Maria Parish Church. Built in 1727, the Baclayon Church has been a repository of priceless liturgical and cultural artifacts which reflect the rich Boholano history and heritage. With the retooling of the museum, outstanding pieces from the parish collection are presented against the backdrop of the liturgical seasons, showing visitors the context in which these objects were used or being used in the different liturgical celebrations and observances. Fr. Milan Ted Torralba, Chair of the Diocesan Commission for Church Cultural Heritage and alumnus of the Cultural Heritage Studies Program, initiated this serial development of church museums, part of the faith-based tourism program of the Diocese.

The opening ceremony was led by Most Reverend Alberto S. Uy, the Bishop of Tagbilaran diocese, with a welcome message from Msgr. Harold Anthony S. Parilla, Immaculate Conception Parish priest and Vicar General of the diocese. A special message was delivered by Atty. Edgardo M. Chatto, 1st Bohol Congressional District Representative and video message from Dr. Rene R. The UST Medicine Class of 1981 celebrated their 40th anniversary through an exhibition of their own artworks in various media. The exhibition, titled “GILAS, PUSO, BUHAY: When Doctors Paint”, raised funds for the benefit of the indigent patients at the UST Hospital and opened at the Main Gallery of the UST Museum on November 16, 2022.

More than forty years have transpired since the graduates of UST Medicine Class 1981 left the portals of UST. Some chose to stay but a number became part of the medical diaspora, each seeking his own place in various fields of medicine. After spending most of their productive professional lives in intense academic and clinical work, this time, either retired or nearing retirement, the members of the class return to a lost love: ART.

By rekindling their interest in art, they became young again, playing with shapes and colors. By drawing and painting, they rediscovered a part of themselves that was buried and overtaken by the rigors of medical training and practice. For them, it was like breathing a new kind of air and being filled with a sense of awe and wonder in their late years.

“In the play of art we regain the wit and the courage to deal with the harshness or dullness of daily life. We turn to art, not to escape but to allow the mind to rest, to release the inner spirit of intuition in play, and thus find our way through our dark labyrinths,” renowned Filipino poet Merlie Alunan once said.
It is in this spirit that the Magilas Art Group was formed during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. After more than a year of learning from each other and sharing their experiences and challenges in painting and drawing online, the class agreed to celebrate its Ruby anniversary by mounting an exhibition, not only to feature their artworks, but to raise funds for the benefit of the indigent patients needing surgery at the UST Hospital Clinical Division as well.

The opening of the exhibition was graced by the presence of UST Secretary General Rev. Fr. Louie Coronel, O.P.; UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (USTFMS) Regent Rev. Fr. Angel Aparicio, O.P.; USTFMS Dean Dr. Ma Lourdes Domingo-Maglinao; UST Hospital Director Dr. Charito Malong-Consolacion; Department of Surgery Chairman Dr . David Bolong; immediate past president of the UST Medical Alumni Association Dr. Jo Mariano; Thomasian Class 1981 president Dr. Conrad Manalad; over-all coordinator in the preparation of the event Dr. Isaias Lanzona; as well as class officers and members of the Thomasian medical community.
