In partnership with Unilever Philippines, the UST Counseling and Career Center (CCC) opened the 2017 Career Fair with the theme “Excellence. Innovation. Greatness.” last May 3, 2017 (Wednesday) at the Plaza Mayor.

“We are moving toward the direction of making our partnership with companies stronger with our Career Center [as a model],” CCC Director Lucila Bance said. “The Counseling and Career Center is a conduit to expedite the implementation, the various acts of collaborative partnership and industries.”

In line with the 21st-century global competencies, Bance highlighted that they have pilot-tested their programs where they forge ties with their partner companies through various seminars and talks. “We have to continuously improve to meet global standards in this endeavor.” Bance said. “We are also working toward more enhance partnership with social media.”

In her message, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Clarita Carillo, PhD, noted that forging ties with industry partners made the students’ training relevant. “Universities can no longer seclude themselves in their ivory towers. No university will survive without linking with industry, who extends its hand of friendship.”

On this note, Carillo expressed gratitude to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – STRIDE, which for the last three years has helped UST transform its old Guidance and Counseling Department into the present-day Counseling and Career Center, guiding it toward becoming the model career center in the country. She likewise thanked Unilever and the corporations who have always been partners in ensuring that Thomasians become gainfully employed in the country’s top companies. Finally, she paid homage to the members of the Thomasian community–administrators, faculty, staff, and the CCC–for forming the students. To the students, Carillo challenged them to take the opportunities: “We can only bring a horse to the river, but not force it to drink, so says an old proverb. Over the years you have stayed in UST, we have tried to bring you to that river. I hope you will seize the opportunities.”

The 2017 Career Fair will be open to Thomasians until May 5, 2017 (Friday) and includes the country’s top corporations. Graduating students will get the opportunity to submit their rĂ©sumĂ©s and in some cases be interviewed on the spot as they attempt to gain employment.

Last April 19, 2017, UST Literary Society of the  of the  held “DANAS: The 4th UST Literary Society Social Issues Seminar on ‘Nation’-Building and National Liberation at Thomas Aquinas Research Center Auditorium. Speakers for this event were Prof. Nathania Chua from Ateneo de Manila University, and Scholar-Activist Adrienne Onday from the University of the Philippines. They tackled the importance of awareness in political issues, as well as the role of youths and their capabilities in making a difference.

Real Battles are won Offline

Onday urged the young members of society who have the luxury of being educated to use their privileges to reach out. Onday noted that one must not act only for attention then perceive the magnitude of its impact afterward. “What we must do is build the weapons we have: if you write, use your words. If you draw, use your lines and your colors to illustrate what you want the world for them to see” she said. “The point of protest is to bring awareness and attention [as well as] outrage to the pre-existing issues of killings and to the failed justice system.” Onday said. “Having a right is just as well exercising this right to enact this obligation to protect the rights of other people.” Chua underscored that people must take their online advocacies and platform into the streets. “At the end of the day, you cannot eat your tweet. Hashtags have helped in calling [for change], even in the legislative,” she said, citing the debacle that stirred on social media in an attempt of the government to tax beauty products, leading to #DontTaxMyBeauty online campaign. “If you are going to limit yourself only in your social media accounts, there will be nothing. You have to think about your impact.” “The more you are with together, the more greater impact you can cause [
] People create bigger ripples of change together. You have to surround yourself with the people who will enable you to make the right thing,” Chua said.

The Commission on Higher Education recognized the ŸĆɫ’s joint Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, major in Metallurgical Engineering program with Curtin University – Australia, as one of three Transnational Education Programs. This same recognition makes UST a Delivering Higher Education Institute (DHEI), based on an April 6, 2017 memorandum signed by CHEd Chairman Patricia Licuanan, PhD.

The ŸĆÉ« in January 2016 formally launched the program with Curtin University, with the foundation year of course work being provided in Manila and the second year on metallurgical engineering being provided in Western Australia.

With the recognition from CHEd, Philippine faculty members affected by the K-12 transition may apply for a CHEd scholarship to take the program.

During the first term of Academic Year 2016-2017, six students completed their course work in UST on scholarship from the San Miguel Corporation. Two of those are now in Western Australia under the Australia Awards scholarship, while two have received provisional offers by Australia Awards.

The Mineral and Mining Engineering Program of Curtin University is ranked #1 in Australia and #2 in the whole world by QS.
